Teams

What is a team?

A relay team consists of 10 to 15 people per team. The relay part of the event is that at least one member from each team is to be on the track at all times during the 18 hours of the event. You may walk, run, or crawl, whatever you desire. You will be walking among family, friends, and acquaintances giving you the opportunity to meet many, many people and have fun at the same time.

Fundraising?

The fundraising consists of getting donations from family, friends, co-workers, etc. Any amount of donation is accepted and receipts are available for anyone who wants one. With a donation of $10 or more the donor may purchase a luminary in which the team will put the name of the person the donor chooses. Each team member will receive a packet which has all the information about the Relay and also envelopes to keep their money in until they turn it in to their Team Captain. There are incentive prizes for raising money as well as trophies to be presented at the end of the Relay for the individual who raised the most money, team that raised the most money, and business who donated the most money.

What is a luminary?

Each team will receive plain white paper bags to decorate as they wish. Your imagination is open to play here. At the top of each bag you will place the name of the person the donor has designated for that bag. If the individual has died from cancer, you will have “In Memory Of above their name. If they are a survivor, you will have “In Honor Of” above their name. At the Relay, the luminaries will have sand and a candle placed in the bottom and the bags will be lined all the way around the track as many times as we have luminaries for. There will be a luminary ceremony at 10 p.m. in which all the lights at the track will be turned off and just the luminary bags will light the way for the walkers. It is truly an awesome site!

Where will the teams be set up?

Each team is encouraged to come up with a name and decorate their designated camp site accordingly. “Communities Discovering A Cure” is the overall theme for the Relay if you want to do something along that theme. However, your imagination is free to play. Bring tents, sleeping bags, chairs, whatever you want to make yourself comfortable.

Team Captains

Each team will have a captain, or co-captains who will attend the monthly meetings beginning in
March. They will pick up the team packets and information to relay to their team. Again, we will meet once a month but if there are any questions between meetings you may contact the Team
Recruitment Chairperson or any of the other chairpersons for this event.

Team Captain Meetings

Team Captains meet the third Wednesday of the month.  The meetings began in March, with the meeting place announced in the Free Press and KORT. Contact Mickie Steiger or Janene Leaton for additional information about Relay Teams.
